The Greenbrier Resort is the largest employer in the county. Located in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains, The Greenbrier has earned a reputation as one of America’s premier luxury resorts. The resort covers 6,500 acres and has 739 guestrooms, suites, and estate houses as well as conference facilities. It even has its own diagnostic medical clinic.
Historically, the roots of the resort go back to when the healing sulphur springs were first discovered in 1778. Shortly after this discovery, a cottage community was developed nearby. This community eventually evolved into what was once known as the White Sulphur Springs Hotel. Today, The Greenbrier is not only an award-wining, five-diamond luxury resort, it is a designated National Historic Landmark and has had as its guests 22 US presidents, several world leaders, and other distinguished and celebrated personalities.
The Greenbrier offers over 50 recreational activities including 3 championship golf courses. (Golfing legend Sam Sneed was once the golf pro at The Greenbrier.) Other activities include indoor and outdoor tennis courts and a 40,000 square foot spa.
For kids ages 3-12, the Adventure Zone offers full-day programs. Evening programs are offered for ages 6-12 which combine the artistic and intellectual with physical and outdoor activities. In addition, special programs like Discovers (ages 3-5) and Explorers (ages 6-12) are offered; babysitters for children under the age of 3 are available on an hourly basis.
Other activities that are enjoyed at the resort include bowling, billiards, fishing, hunting, horseback riding, kayaking, mountain biking, whitewater rafting, shopping, movies, indoor games, gourmet cooking classes, tours, concerts, and much, much more.
The Greenbrier offers an excellent dining experiences with its nine cafés and restaurants and superb room service. Among the resorts restaurants are The Main Dining Room which offers the essence of The Greenbrier dining experience; The Draper’s Café which offers more casual and relaxed dining; The Hemisphere which boasts a global cuisine, and Slammin’ Sammy’s which is a sports lounge offering light snacks and beverage service.
The Greenbrier Spa offers therapeutic hydrotherapy using mineral-based products that are found in the area. The service focus is on revitalization and relaxation and several spa packages are available.
