About White Sulphur Springs WV

White Sulphur Springs, WV, once known as Dry Creek and “Spa City”, was incorporated in 1909.  Prior to its incorporation, the area had enjoyed a reputation of having curative powers in its springs, and visitors began to come to the area seeking those healing powers as early as the 18th century.

Those who chose to relocate to the area named the town White Sulphur Springs because of the clarity of the largest spring found there.  Today, this spring is housed in a domed and columned spring house on the property of a world renown resort, The Greenbrier, which is also a National Historical Landmark.  The Black Sulphur Spring is also located at the resort.

The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs is the town’s largest employer and offers more than 50 recreational activities which include three championship golf courses, both indoor and outdoor tennis courts, and a huge 40,000 square foot spa.  In fact, golf legend Sam Sneed was once the resort’s onsite pro. Other activities for visitors to the resort include pheasant and quail hunting at a nearby wing-shooting preserve.

Vacation Homeowners Join the Permanent Population

Recently, residential development has attracted second- and third-home buyers and is popular with international celebrities who have built homes near the resort.  White Sulphur Springs is a popular vacation destination due in large part to the Greenbrier Resort.  White Sulphur Springs is serviced by the Cardinal Route of Amtrak and is convenient to I-64 and US Highway 60.

The city of White Sulphur Springs had over 2,300 people as of the 2000 census.  Of the 1,127 households in the city at that time, 21.6% had children under the age of 18.  The education of the students living in White Sulphur Springs is provided by the Greenbrier County School district whose goal it is to provide an environment for students to excel academically, to become self-sufficient, and to become contributing members of their communities.
